What We Mean by “End of Year Accounts”
When we talk about end of year accounts, we mean the official financial statements, including profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow, and supporting notes, that must be sent to HMRC and Companies House.
These reports are a legal requirement for limited companies, but they also provide a clear overview of how your business has performed over the year. Done properly, they are more than a tick-box exercise; they’re a useful tool for planning ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are end of year accounts?
End of year accounts are a summary of your business’s financial activity for the year. They show your income, expenses, assets, and debts, giving a clear picture of your overall performance. These accounts are used to work out tax and provide important information for business planning.
When do end of year accounts need to be filed?
End of year accounts must be filed with Companies House and HMRC by specific deadlines. For most limited companies, the deadline is nine months after the end of the financial year for Companies House, and twelve months after the year end for HMRC. Sole traders report their figures through the annual Self Assessment tax return.
Are end of year accounts figures exclusive of VAT?
In most cases, end of year accounts are prepared without VAT included, unless your business is not registered for VAT. The figures usually show income and expenses net of VAT, as VAT is treated separately and reported on VAT returns.
What is the difference between end of year accounts & Management Accounts?
Management accounts are produced throughout the year to help you make ongoing decisions about your business. End of year accounts are the formal, final report of the year that must be submitted to HMRC and Companies House. One keeps you on track during the year, the other meets your legal requirements and provides the complete picture.
